Earlier this summer, I wrote What Do You Have To Lose? Many of you reached out directly to let me know that the article resonated (it even encouraged some of you to pick up and move to a new city!).
Sometimes we need a little push or some encouragement to help us cross the finish line. We were never meant to crush our career goals alone--we need a community to root us on!
On May 29, 1851, Sojourner Truth gave an epic speech called, Ain’t I A Woman. In my wildest imagination, I picture Sojourner’s homegirls giving her a pep talk and reminding her why she must speak on their behalf. I am confident she was hesitant, anxious, and perhaps even feared for her life by taking such a risk. In one part of her speech she said, “If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again! And now they is asking to do it, the men better let them!” Somebody call the Deaconess because that last line makes me want to run all up and down the church aisles. And if that isn’t enough to make you hoop and holla, the fact that so many women of color were elected this past Tuesday should remind you that all it takes is one step toward an action that gets you closer to your goals.
