I am a HUGE fan of my local public library. If you know me, you've probably heard me talk about the library non-stop. It’s a treasure trove of information and entertainment: there's books, movies, storytimes for kids, language classes, passes to visit local attractions, access to language learning, info for small business owners, author talks, technology classes, and more. I cannot say enough nice things about the library.
Growing up, my sister and I spent many of our summers visiting our relatives in Louisiana. One of the highlights for us was going with our great aunt to her library for summer reading. We'd get tote bags from the library, would borrow loads of books, and we'd be set for the summer.
My library here in Denver recently started its annual summer reading program as well, aiming to get kids (and adults!) to read more this summer. One of my nephews is signed up. The library asks kids to read every day for at least 20 minutes and mark off each time that they do. There’s no limitations on what they read -- just that they do it. At the end of the summer, they can pick up a prize for consistently reading all summer
It got me thinking -- what consistent habits are you cultivating, and how are you rewarding yourself for sticking to those habits?
One way to level up as professionals is to remain consistent in our personal brands and in our work. Consistency is key to getting to the next level in anything we set out to do. Think of athletes who practice the same drills over and over, or musicians who play for hours a day to perfect their craft. Is there a new habit you want to cultivate? Reading, exercise, learning an instrument, etc -- set a small goal for yourself every day and reward yourself when you consistently meet it.
Also, in honor of summer reading, tweet us @myweeklymemo and let us know what you’re reading this summer!
